NOVEMBER to JANUARY 2019, group project

This group project was carried out in collaboration with the company Joul, now called "Zenbus" after the service they offer. Zenbus is a smartphone application that allows you to locate your bus in real time with extreme precision. The aim of this project was to propose graphic improvements by integrating new concepts with real added value to make the user experience more interesting and encourage him to use this service and not another one on a regular basis. This project has been thought out and designed by: Bastien Adam, Antoine Cesbron, Victor Ducrot and Mathis Freudenberger.

First steps

To start generating ideas and concepts around this topic, we analyzed the existing application by creating a tree structure of all the navigation possibilities of the application while taking into account loading times. That is, these waiting times presented a real challenge for the partner to improve. At the same time, we pointed out some problems or other features that we thought it would be interesting to rework or exploit.
So after the pooling of our research, the first ideas of integrable concepts began to emerge.

The concept

Following this introductory phase, we have precisely defined our work axes including the improvements to be made and new concepts to be integrated into the application. The idea was to add value to the application other than simply locating the bus here: the ability to create interactions via zenbus with groups of friends by sharing or receiving their location in real time. One can imagine this being implemented when several people have to get together for daily activities using public transport, which can be complex sometimes.

Due to a confidentiality agreement on this project, I will not be able to show all the screens created. On the other hand, some of our improvements have been integrated directly into the application, so they will be presented via the zenbus screens.

Menu in 3 levels

We have designed a menu with 3 levels of information, this allows the user to adjust the modal as he wishes while having relevant information displayed according to what he needs most.

We also thought that embodying an avatar on the map could be a way to make the application more user-friendly. This while allowing you to differentiate yourself from your friends by integrating a notion of playfulness into the personalization of the avatar in question.

Bus lines & bus stops switchable view

Finally, we have designed a system that allows you to switch between two views on the map: that of the bus lines and that of the stops. Functionality that allows answering once again the most appropriate need of the user, according to the types of use that can be made of the application.

The method

We discovered and implemented the agile method for this project using Trello. Indeed, by working in three production sprints, we were able to define and push to maximum potential, the functionalities and improvements bringing significant added value to the application. This was compared with the constant feedback from the partners, each concept was discussed and thought out for real optimization. In order to prioritize tasks and to know the relationship between working time and the added value of integrated concepts, we calculated the ROI (Return On Investment) of each task to select the most interesting ones.

The production process

For all our projects we use Sketch for the production and design of interfaces. It has the advantage of having very powerful, practical symbols for teamwork. Also, the possibility to create several workspaces per document is very useful when working in sprints. I also like using Adobe XD which is constantly evolving, but which does not yet have as many possibilities as Sketch when working in a group. In addition, Sketch's export to Principle has allowed us to create an advanced animated prototype, offering the customer a precise visualization of the micro-interactions thought.

This project was a way of working using the agile method to understand the issues and benefits it presents in group work in direct contact with real clients with specific expectations.
